Chicago Blackhawks drafted him in the third round, 59th overall pick.
Marc was part of the Chicoutimi Sagueneens in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League in his first season. He made his senior debut in 1984. He spent his first five years with the team and then got traded to New York Islanders. While his time with the club, Bergevin mostly played in the American Hockey League for Springfield Indians and led the team to consecutive Calder Cups.
After completing the 1991/92 season, Bergevin moved to Tampa Bay Lighting and remained with the team for three seasons. In the next few years, Marc moved to numerous clubs, eventually retiring after completing the 2003/4 season. He finished his career with 36 goals, 145 assists for 181 points, and 1,090 penalty minutes.
Shortly after his retirement, the Blackhawks hired him as the professional scout. In 2008, Marc started working as an assistant coach for the Blackhawks. In 2012, Bergevin was named general manager and executive vice president of the Montreal Canadiens after working as the Chicago Blackhawks assistant general manager for a year.
In 2013/14, Marc finished second for the General Manager of the year Award. He is still the general manager of the franchise and is in his tenth year.
