Ma Long is a Chinese professional table tennis player. He is the current Olympic as well as World Champion and is currently ranked no. 3 as of June 2021 in the world tennis ranking. Earlier, he was ranked the world no.1 and held the position for 64 months. He became the fifth male player to complete a career in Grand Slam after winning the 2016 Rio Olympics.

He was raised by his father Ma Yujun. Besides this, there are no pieces of information about his other family members. Even his mother's name is unknown. He started playing table tennis at an early age.

Ma Long Professional career

At the age of 17, Long won both the Asian and World Junior Championships and became the youngest champion in 2006. In his early career, he trained with Wang Hao and former Chinese National Team coach Ma Kai Xuan. And later he started his training with Qin Zhi Jian. Long achieved great success in singles before he turned 22. He won the Asian Cup and World Tour Grand Finals twice. Moreover, finals of the China National Games and All-China Championships as well as 11 ITTF World Tour tournaments.

Even being the world no.1 player, Long didn't get the opportunity to participate in the 2012 Olympics because of his temporary dip in ratings. He lost all the tournaments at the Asian Olympic Qualification Tournament as well as Korea Open. Furthermore, he didn't get the opportunity to win an Olympic medal in singles although he was one of the best table tennis players. In 2013, he defeated Wang Hao at the WTTC.

Following year, he won China Open, Asian Championships as well as the China National Games. However, he got defeated by Xu Xin in the ITTF World Tour Grand Finals. He won the Asian Cup for the fourth time in March 2014. Moreover, he also won the 2014 WTTC without losing even a single set. After his victory, he received the Victor Barna Award as the tournament's best player. Furthermore, he won the China Open for the fifth time. Coming to 2015, Long won Kuwait Open as well as the German Open.

However, in 2015 WTTC he achieved great success. In the whole tournament, he just lost a single set. He captured his sixth victory at the China Open. Moreover, he also won his double tournament at the Chinese Super League championship along with his partner Ningbo. Besides these, due to the injury, he didn't participate in other tournaments of the following year.

In the starting of 2016, Long won the German Open without losing a single set until the finals. Even in the 2016 WTTC, he helped his country to win the tournament without losing a single set. However, he lost the final match at the Kuwait Open. Besides this, he got qualified for the Olympic Singles in Rio by winning his section of the Asian Olympic Qualification Tournament. However, he was able to win the gold medal at the Olympics Rio.  

By receiving the gold medal, Long became the first male player to complete the Grand Slam. Furthermore, he became the second player to be the defending champion of all three Grand Slam competitions. Moreover, he also became the first male player to win every important singles competition possible. Coming to 2017 he won the Qatar Open in February. However, he injured his wrist in the final match of 2017 WTTC. So he wasn't able to perform well in the matches. Long won the Japan Open for the first time in June by defeating Xu in the finals.
