Luís Filipe Madeira Caeiro Figo or famously known as Luis Figo is a retired football player who played as an attacking midfielder for Portuguese national team and several renowned Spanish football clubs such as Barcelona, Real Madrid CF as well as Italian Serie A club, Inter Milan.

He has won the FIFA World Player of the Year and for his contribution to Portuguese football, he was awarded the Officer in the Order of Prince Henry.

Figo represented Portugal in their youth team and made his full international debut in 1991 and retired in 2006. He played at the UEFA Euro 1996, 2000, 2004 as well as FIFA World Cup in 2002 and 2006.

Luis Figo’s Career

After playing for the youth team of Sporting CP, he joined the main team in 1989 and made his debut against Maritimo on 1 April 1990. He scored his first goal against Torreense in 1990 and was the part of the team that won the Taca de Portugal in 1994 /95.

The Portuguese midfielder then signed with Spanish La Liga club, Barcelona for a reported transfer fee of around £2.25 million in 1995 and played alongside football greats like Ronaldo, Rivaldo as well as Patrick Kluivert.

He was the part of the successful Barcelona team that won UEFA Champions League and UEFA Super Cup in 1997.

Figo made a surprise move to Barcelona's bitter rival, Real Madrid CF and signed a record deal worth  €62 million in the summer of 2000. He played alongside French legend Zinedine Zidane and won the UEFA Champions League in 2002.

Overall, he played in 164 matches and scored 38 goals for Real Madrid during his year run with the club.

After winning the FIFA World Youth Championship in 1991 and starting the golden generation of Portuguese football, he made his senior international debut against Luxembourg in a friendly on 16 October 1991 and scored his first international goal against Bulgaria on 11 November 1992.

He also scored his first international hat-trick against  Moldova in a friendly on 28 February 2001.

Figo was the part of the Portuguese squad that finished as runner-up to eventual champions, Greece in the UEFA Euro 2004 and  led the Portuguese team at the 2006 FIFA World Cup, where they finished at the fourth place at the tournament,

He retired in 2006 with 127 appearances and scored 32 goals for Portugal.

He is married to his wife, Swedish model, Helen Svedin and the couple is blessed with three daughters, Daniela born in 2004, Martina born in April 2002 and Stella born on 2004.

Figo owns a house in Sweden and was temporary joint co-owners with A1 Team Portugal in A1 Grand Prix during 2005/06 season.

Luis Figo has run a presidential campaign for FIFA president against Sepp Blatter, his endorsers, as well as his supporters, were Manchester United manager, Jose Mourinho, and former Madrid teammate David Beckham who supported him in his causes.

He withdrew from the campaign on May 21, 2018, citing, he did not want absolute power.
