Hartman had a successful MLS career with 17 seasons under his name but has only made six international appearances for the United States national team.
Kevin Eugene Hartman was born on May 25, 1974, in Athens, Ohio, United States. For his high school education, he attended the Radford High School in Radford, Virginia. He played for the school's varsity team as the backup goalkeeper. He would later move to Palos Verdes California with his family and continued his education with the Verdes High School. After graduating high school, Hartman played college soccer at California States University, Dominguez Hills and UCLA.
Kevin Hartman entered the 1997 MLS College Draft where he was picked by Los Angeles Galaxy in the 29th overall. During his rookie year, he saw very little time in the field being stuck behind Jorge Campos. After the first season, Hartman entered the expansion draft where he was picked by Chicago Fire. Galaxy traded Campos and Chris Armas to Fire in exchange for Hartman and Danny Pena.

After the trade, Kevin Hartman became a starter for the Galaxy. He stayed with the Galaxy until the year 2006. During his time at Galaxy, he was able to help the team win the U.S. Open Cup in 2011 and 2005, and the MLS Cup in 2002 and 2005. He was also named the MLS Goalkeeper of the Year in 1999. After the end of 2006 season, Hartman was traded to Kansas City Wizards.
During Hartman's time at the Wizards, he broke the all-time MLS save record previously held by Tony Meola. Hartman stayed with the team for three years before leaving the team due to a disagreement in a new contract extension with the club. He was then traded to FC Dallas in return for a conditional second-round 2012 MLS SuperDraft pick.
Kevin was injured by the famous Red Bulls striker Thierry Henry on September 16, 2010. He had to stay away from the field to recover from the injury. The following year, Hartman became the first goalkeeper in MLS history to record 100 shutouts. Hartman played his 400th match in MLS on July 4, 2012.

Hartman was unable to renew his contract with FC Dallas after the end of 2012 MLS season which resulted in him entering the 2012 MLS Re-Entry Draft. He remained undrafted in both rounds of the draft becoming a free agent. On November 21, 2013, Hartman announced of his retirement from professional soccer.
