Johnson was ranked by major recruiting services as a consensus five-star recruit. Further, he was the highest-ranked player in Tennessee in the 2020 class. As per his commitment on 6th August 2019, he chose to play college basketball for Tennessee over Ohio State and Virginia, among others.

On 8th December 2020, he was one of the first Vols off the bench in his collegiate debut who finished with four points with a steal in 13 minutes of action during UT's season-opening victory over Colorado.
