Career of Karim El Ahmadi

Karim El Ahmadi took his first step in the field of football as a youth member of his hometown club UDI Enschede when he was 9. He grabbed the limelight in a short-time was called up to joined Twente Academy.

Following this, he played for FC Twente in their U-17 and U-19 team. After being promoted from the youth club, he started playing in a senior team since 2003.

His first match came on 21st March 2004 in a 2-0 victory against FC Utrecht. Following this, he played two games against Groningen and RBC Roosendaal.  He provided as assists for Blaise Nkufo in 4-1 the victory against Heerenveen on 28th August 2004.

Ahmadi netted his first goal on 13th November 2003, in a 2-0 victory against N.E.C. During his 2004-05 season, he played 16 league games, mostly on the wing positions. He then established himself in the starting xi.

Ahmadi later suffered knee-injury in UEFA 1-1 tie against Levadia Tallinn. After a recovery, he played his first match in a 7-1 win over Groningen replacing Wout Brama. In 2006, October, he renewed his contract with the team which would him until 2009, with an options to extend until 2011.

Ahmadi then netted his goal in a 2-1 win against Excelsior on 3rd February 2007. Following this, he scored a goal in a 1-1 tie against Heracles on 8th April 2007. Feyenoord

Ahmadi was transferred to Feyernoord on 1st July 2008, in a deal worth €5 million for 5 years. He made his official debut for the club replacing Luigi Bruins in a 2-1 win against Kalmar FF during the UEFA Cup.

As a starting eleven, his first match came against NEC on 5th October 2008 in a 0-2 home defeat. He netted his first goal for the club against Utrecht, which ended in a 5-2 victory.

Following, his second goal came in a 2-0 victory against De Graafschap. He then received an interest from German side Hamburger SV. His team lost via 6-1 against Ajax in the final of the KNVB Cup.

Loan Career

Ahmadi was sent to United Arab Emirates professional football club Al Ahli on a six-month loan deal and made his debut in a 0-0 tie against Al Dhafra S.C.C. He netted his first goal in the UAE League in a 2-2 tie over Ittihad Kalba. Before ending his loan-season, he played 10 games scoring 1 goal.

Aston Villa

Ahmadi was signed by England’s Premier League Aston Villa on 2nd July 2012, with the transfer fee of €2.80 million. He made his debut in a  2-1 victory against Burton Albion on 14th July 2012, at Pirelli Stadium. He then named as the Player of the month in August 2012 by voting. For the club, he scored 3 goals in 51 appearances.

Returning to his Former Club

On 1st September 2014, Ahmadi was transferred to his ex-club Feyenoord with the transfer fee €700K on a three-year contract.  He has so far scored 9 goals in 116 appearances.

Ahmadi was included in the team that won KNVB Cup final against AZ Alkmaar via 3-0 on 22nd April 2018. In addition, He has received several honors and awards for his playing including 2016-017 Eredivisie and 2017 Johan Cruijff Shield.

National Career

Ahmadi made his international debut with the Morocco U-20, for whom he played 10 games. Following this, he played 9 games for Morocco U-23 scoring 1 goal. On November 19, 2008, he debuted professionally in a 3-0 friendly win against Zambia.

The 33-years old football star is ready to compete for the 2018 World Cup in Russia as he was named in Morocco’s 23-man squad in May 2018 along with Younes Belhanda, Nordin Amrabat, and Faycal Fajr. He has been capped 44 times for his national team scoring 1 goal.
