He has represented Croatia in their youth teams and made his full senior international debut for Croatia in 2007.
Mario was born on 21 May 1986 in Slavonski Brod, SR Croatia, SFR Yugoslavia. He started his senior playing career with the Croation football club, NK Marsonia in 2004.
Mario later went on to play for several European football clubs such as NK Zagreb, Dinamo Zagreb, VfL Wolfsburg, Bayern Munich and Atletico Madrid.
He is currently playing for Juventus after he signed a four-year contract with the club in the summer of 2015 for a reported transfer fee of around €19 million with an added €2 million for a performance bonus.
