Early Life & High School Career

A native of Harrington Park, New Jersey, Justin Minaya was born on March 26, 1999. His father, Omar Minaya, was a general manager for the New York Mets and the Montreal Expos in Major League Baseball.

Justin played these other sports growing up but decided to focus on basketball in high school. For his final year at Northern Valley Regional High School in Old Tappan, he scored 20.4, grabbed 10.6 boards, and dished out 3.1 assists on the court.

At the helm, his 2017 squad went 28-3 and won the state title. By NJ.com's standards, he was not only the best player in Bergen County, but also the best player in the entire state.

College Stats

Minaya initially committed to play college basketball for Vermont, but he changed his mind and signed with South Carolina in May 2017. He joined the Gamecocks as a three-star recruit and a versatile wing player.

In addition, he started 30 games as a freshman, averaging 7.9 points and 4.2 rebounds per game. He was named to the SEC All-Freshman Team and helped South Carolina reach the second round of the NIT.

Minaya missed most of his sophomore season due to a knee injury that required surgery. He returned for his junior season and started 25 games, averaging 7.4 points and 5.6 rebounds per game. He was one of the team’s best defenders and shooters, leading the Gamecocks in three-point percentage (36.4%) and blocks (25).

After his junior season, Minaya decided to transfer to Providence for his final year of eligibility. He joined the Friars as a graduate transfer and a key addition to their roster. He started 31 games for Providence, averaging 10.8 points and 6.6 rebounds per game.

The athlete was named to the All-Big East Third Team and helped Providence reach the semifinals of the Big East Tournament.

NBA Draft

Minaya went undrafted in the 2022 NBA draft, but he signed a two-way contract with the Portland Trail Blazers in August 2022. He made his NBA debut on April 4, 2023, scoring six points and grabbing four rebounds in a win over the Houston Rockets.

The young basketball player appeared in four games for the Trail Blazers in his rookie season, averaging 4.3 points and 3.8 rebounds in 22.3 minutes per game. He also played for the Maine Celtics of the NBA G League, where he averaged 15.2 points and 7.4 rebounds in 12 games.

Minaya is currently under contract with the Trail Blazers for the 2023-24 season, but he will be a restricted free agent in 2024. He is expected to compete for a spot on the Trail Blazers’ rotation or earn another two-way deal with another team.
