During his early years, Mota learned to play baseball with his father. At the age of 20, he attended California State University Fullerton in California on a baseball scholarship. Further, he graduated with a degree in Communications.

After graduation, he did an internship with Fred Roggin at Channel 4. He also worked in some of the local TV and radio stations.

Jose Mota started his career as a baseball player in 1985 and has been broadcasting since 2002, on several sports network.

Playing Career

At the age of 20, Mota accepted a baseball scholarship offered by California State University. In 1985, he was drafted in the second round by the Chicago White Sox in the 1985 Amateur Draft.

Later, he joined some of the best professional baseball teams like Texas Rangers, Los Angeles Dodgers, and Oakland Athletics. He was then sent to the San Diego Padres in 1989 and made his major league debut in 1991 with the Padres.

With Padres, he played in 17 games but had only 17 at-bats and hit .222.

The next season he signed with Kansas City Royals as a minor league free agent. With Royals, he batted .230 in 1992, .282 in 1993 and .257 in 1994. Mota played in more than 100 games in each of the three years. 

In Omaha, Mota became known for his versatility, playing every infield and outfield position during his time there. He played in 60 games and is his average hitting was .232

Broadcasting Career

From 1997 till the present date, Mota has served as a color analyst/play-by-play announcer for the FOX baseball "Game of the Week" in Spanish, including MLB playoffs and World Series, and for the "NFL Sunday" football broadcasts.

He currently serves as a TV pre/post game analyst on Fox Sports West. In addition, he also handled the in-game color analyst role for home Spanish television broadcasts during the 2013-17 seasons.

His first MLB broadcast assignment was for the Los Angeles Dodgers Spanish radio in 2001. In 2009, he worked as MLB International's color analyst for the worldwide telecast of the World Baseball Classic.

He worked as a sideline reporter for ESPN during the World Baseball Classic of 2006, 2013 and 2017. On August 20, 2017, Mota did play-by-play announcing for the Angels radio broadcasts on AM station KWKW.

He became the first MLB broadcaster to do called play-by-play commentary on English radio broadcasts and Spanish radio broadcasts. In January 2018, Mota assisted Vladimir Guerrero as the translator at his introductory press conference.
