Jordan Lucella Elizabeth Chiles was born April 15, 2001, in Tualatin, Oregon, and grew up in Vancouver, Washington. She was named after the great Michael Jordan and was destined for greatness. She discovered her sport at six years old, and at 11 years old, she was elite. Her parents, Timothy and Gina Chiles, fostered her desire, and at age 12, she was nationally known as a member of the Junior U.S. National Team.
Chiles debuted internationally as an elite in the all-around at the 2013 American Classic, winning a bronze medal. Her international debut abroad was at the 2014 City of Jesolo Trophy, winning team gold and individual silver on vault.
Domination of such junior events as the Secret U.S. Classic and US National Championships continued as Chiles asserted herself on the floor exercise and vault with medal performances.
She moved to senior gymnastics in 2017 but struggled at first. Things changed, though, in 2018 after she made up her mind to move to Texas and train under the supervision of Simone Biles at World Champions Centre with Laurent and Cecile Landi.
This became life-giving to her since she was considering dropping gymnastics due to racial discrimination and body criticisms. She was, by 2021, the Winter Cup all-around winner and a competitively selected member of Team USA for the Olympic Games in Tokyo.
At the Tokyo Olympics, Chiles burst into the spotlight when Simone Biles withdrew from the team final due to mental health concerns. Chiles, who had little time to prepare, delivered clutch performances on uneven bars and the balance beam to assist Team USA in claiming a silver medal. Her fortitude in this highly pressurized situation earned her widespread admiration.
Chiles returned to Olympic competition at Paris 2024 with confidence regained. She assisted Team USA in winning the team gold and earned bronze on floor exercise after appealing a scoring error.
Her philosophy of "doing it for herself" was reflective of her growth as a competitor who confronts adversity head-on.
Finding a balance between elite and collegiate competition, Chiles joined UCLA in 2022. She was an instant standout, winning NCAA championships on floor exercise and uneven bars in 2023 while accumulating eight perfect 10s across events. She received nine All-American honors and was named WCGA West Region Gymnast of the Year.
Chiles accumulated three to her résumé at the 2022 World Championships (team gold, vault silver, and floor silver) and three more at the 2023 Pan American Games. She remains a record-holder with 11 U.S. National Team appearances.
Chiles is a passionate believer in mental health awareness and body positivity. She has faced adversity in her life early in her career, including body shaming and racism, and used those challenges as strength.
She also established Melanin Drip Clothing Co., embracing Black excellence.
Well-known for her vibrant personality, Chiles is a style icon with tattoos representing milestones in life, like Olympic rings and motivational quotes that are inspired by her deceased grandfather. Her sneaker collection exceeds 200 pairs, showing how much she loves fashion as much as gymnastics.
Jordan Chiles is an example of resilience, flexibility, and determination in and out of the gym. From overcoming adversity to achieving Olympic gold twice—Tokyo 2020 and Paris 2024—she continues inspiring athletes all over the world with her deep devotion to personal growth and victory.
