Elena Shinohara was born in Saitama, Japan, on April 6, 2000. She, along with her family, moved to the United States when she was five months old. Her mother, Nancy Shinohara, is a former member of the Japanese national rhythmic gymnastics team and also trains Elena. Her father, Minoru Shinohara, is an exercise science researcher at Georgia Tech.
Elena graduated in 2018 from Collins Hill High School and with a bachelor's degree in biochemistry from Georgia Tech. She plans to attend medical school to become a dermatologist after she retires from gymnastics. She resides in Irvine, California, as of 2023.
Elena began rhythmic gymnastics in 2006 and competed in her first national event at the 2015 Rhythmic Invitational. She made the Junior U.S. National Team in 2015 and made her international debut at the 2018 Luxembourg Cup, finishing fourth on ball and fifth on ribbon. She was added to the Senior U.S. National Team in 2019 and competed in events like the Amsterdam Masters, where she earned a silver medal in all-around, and the National Championships, where she came in tenth.
Elena won the Sportsperson of the Year Award twice, in 2019 and 2021, commemorating her dedication to rhythmic gymnastics. She was an Olympic hopeful for the 2016 and 2020 Summer Olympics but failed to compete due to strict qualification standards.
Elena has used her gymnastics knowledge to create a large social media following. She began posting content on TikTok in March 2020, providing rhythmic gymnastics advice and flexibility routines. Her TikTok account has gained more than 5 million followers worldwide. On YouTube, Elena has been posting since December 2007, posting tutorials, vlogs, and training videos.

In addition to her professional career as a gymnast and social media personality, Elena has also been a USA Rhythmic Gymnastics Judge since March 2017, working at competitions like the Junior Olympics National Competition.
From August 2016 through April 2022, she also coached junior gymnasts at Rhythmic Brains, choreographing levels 3–9 routines. Through this experience, she has had an opportunity to share her knowledge and passion for rhythmic gymnastics with the future generation of athletes.
Elena is a bilingual Japanese and English speaker, as she is a multicultural individual.
