Jonathan Ward enrolled at Bishop McNamara where he competed both in football and track. A three-year starter, he set school career records with 83 TDs and 5,689 rushing yards and single-season records with 2,400 rushing yards and 36 TDs.
After graduation, he attended Central Michigan where he was a member of the Central Michigan Chippewas for four seasons. As a freshman, he played eight games and had 200 rushing yards and two TDs on 36 carries in 2016. The following season, he rushed for 1,019 yards and 10 TDs on 178 carries.

On 27th September 2020, Ward made his NFL debut against the Detroit Lions. In Week 17 of the 2020 season against the Los Angeles Rams, Ward recorded his first career reception for an eleven-yard touchdown during the 18–7 loss.
