Hans Vanaken began his football career playing in the youth system of PSV Eindhoven in 2002. In 2008, he joined Lommel United and played in their youth system until 2010. In 2010, Vanaken was promoted to the senior team of Lommel United, making his senior debut in the Belgian Second Division. Following his string of standout performances for Lommel, he became the center of attraction for many top division clubs.
In 2013, he signed to Lokeren. On July 28, 2013, he made his debut for Lokeren in a 3–2 win against Anderlecht, where he scored two goals.
