Granit Zhaka is a native of Basel, Switzerland, born on September 27, 1992. He was raised alongside his brother Taulant Xhaka by their Albanian parents: father, Ragip Xhaka and mother, Elmaze Xhaka. His other sibling is Agnesa Xhaka.
Xhaka's father, Ragip, was a student at the University of Pristina, and at 22, he participated in demonstrations against the Communist Yugoslavia rule in Kosovo, which resulted in three and half year prison sentence to him.
In 1990, Xhaka's family relocated to Switzerland from Podujevo of Pristina before either was born. By nationality, Xhaka is Swiss and Kosovar.
Xhaka started off his footballing career at Concordia Basel in 2000 with his brother. Both stayed two years with the club and moved to Basel.
