In 1980, Fred Hickman went to work with young cable television company Turner Broadcasting System (TBS) in Atlanta, Georgia, working with Nick Charles as a part of sports department for CNN. In 1984, he left and worked with WDIV, NBC affiliate in Detroit Michigan. In November 1986, he returned to TBS to work as a co-anchor with Nick Charles for CNN/Sports Illustrated. From 2002 to 2004, he worked for the YES Network. In late 2004, he joined ESPN in Bristol, Connecticut. During his tenure with ESPN, he hosted SportsCenter, Baseball Tonight, ESPN Classic, NBA Shoot Around, and NBA Coast to Coast.
