Clyde Gates was born on June 13, 1986, in Vernon, Texas as Edmond Darell Gates. His father was Edward Gates who was sentenced to 18 years in prison for murder. He had a rough childhood growing up due to his father's background and him living in a troubled neighborhood. In 2007, he was recruited by Abilene Christian to play football.
During the first season of his collegiate football, he played in 11 games ending with 12 catches for 258 yards and 1 touchdown. In his sophomore year, he played 10 games ending the season with 31 catches for 716 yards and 8 touchdowns. With 792 yards with 5 touchdowns and an average of 14.3 yards per catch, he was named top receiver for the Wildcats in his junior year. His name was entered in the 2011 NFL draft.
Clyde Gates was picked by the Miami Dolphins in the 2011 NFL draft in the 4th round with 111th pick. He made his first touchdown with the Dolphins during the preseason game held on August 12, 2011, against Atlanta. Gates stayed with the team until 2012 before being released from the Dolphins on 31 August 2012.
Gates was picked by the New York Jets on September 1, 2012. During his time at the Jets, he suffered a shoulder injury on October 13, 2013. The injury turned out to be serious enough to bring an end to his seasonal play keeping him on the injured reserve list. His stay at the team was also short lived as he was released from the team on August 30, 2014.

After being released from New York Jets, Clyde Gates was signed by the Tennessee Titans to a futures contract on January 14, 2015. He never played in any official league matches during his time at the Titans. He mostly stayed as a practice squad member and was only able to play some matches in the offseason matches.
The Dallas Cowboys signed Gates on August 20, 2015. He stayed as the practice squad member for the team never playing any official matches. He was released by the Cowboys on September 5, 2015. Gates has not made a return to the sports after being released by the Cowboys.
