Charles Clay Helton, better known as Clay Helton is an American football coach who currently stands as the head coach at the University of Southern California. Earlier, he has also been an assistant coach for the Duke Blue Devils, Houston Cougars, and Memphis Tigers. Helton is a former American football player who played college football at Auburn and then to the Huston as a quarterback.

Early Years

Helton's father Kim Helton, was a graduate assistant for the Florida Gators football team. Later Helton moved to the Miami, Tampa Bay, and Houston areas, with his family as his father coached for the University of Miami, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and Houston Oilers.

Clay Helton enrolled at Clements High School in Sugar Land, Texas, graduating in 1990. 

After redshirting his freshman year, Helton played college football at Auburn as a quarterback. In 1993, he transferred to Houston, following his father was hired as head coach there. At Houston, Helton played 16 games and completed 47 of 87 passes for 420 yards, one touchdown, and four interceptions.

Clay Helton's Coaching Career

Helton joined Duke University in 1995, becoming a graduate assistant for the Duke Blue Devils football team. The following year, he was promoted as running backs coach. 

In 1997, he joined his father at Houston to be running backs coach. He remained in that position until 1999, Kim Helton's final season as head coach. 

In 2000, Helton joined the Memphis Tigers football team as a running back. In 2003, he moved to coach the wide receivers. By 2007, he was promoted to offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach. 

In 2010, Helton was hired by USC to be a quarterbacks coach. By 2013, he became the offensive coordinator.

On October 11, 2015, he once again became the interim head coach of the Trojans after head coach Steve Sarkisian took a leave of absence, and was then subsequently fired. On November 30, 2015, USC removed the interim tag and formally named Helton the 23rd head coach in school history.
