Costa Rican national, Christian Bolanos was born on 17 May 1984 in Hatillo de San Jose Costa Rica. He is the eldest son of Jonathan Bolanos' children, a former Costa Rican footballer who played as a striker.

After playing for Costa Rica in FIFA U-17 World Championship in 2001 at Trinidad and Tobago, he made his international debut against Norway in a friendly match in May 2005. He scored his first goal against Hondorous on 16 July 2005 during CONCACAF Gold Cup.
He has played for Costa Rica in World Cup 2006 and 2014 and also several CONCACAF Gold Cup.
He was one of the major players along with Kendall Waston, Cristian Gamboa, and Johan Venegas, whose team led Costa Rica to FIFA World Cup 2018 held at Russia.
