He also won the U-20 2009 CONCACAF U-20 Championship with Costa Rica.
He made his debut for the senior national team against Argentina in friendly in January 2010 and scored his first international goal against Guyana in 2014 World Cup Qualifier on 16 October 2014.
He was in the squad of Costa Rica that reached quarterfinal rounds 2014 World Cup.
Cristian Gamboa, along with Jose Guillermo Ortiz, Jose Salvatierra, and Johan Venegas, was the key member that helped Costa Rica to reach 2018 FIFA World Cup.
