As a wrestler, he earned four NCAA Division I individual titles and an Olympic gold medal. Furthermore, Sports Illustrated honored his college career as the second most impressive feat in college sports history in 2002.

Later, he also participated in freestyle wrestling but success had not touched his feet. He started his professional coaching career as an assistant coach at Iowa State.
