In his first year, he set a record for the most interceptions in the school. By the time he finished, he had 12 interceptions, 34 times stopping passes, and made 148 tackles. In his senior year, he got third-team All-ACC honors.

Undrafted Free Agent

Even though Borders did well in college, he didn't get picked in the 2017 NFL Draft. He joined the Oakland Raiders without being picked, but they let him go after the preseason. 

Later, he joined the practice squad of the Buffalo Bills, and in December 2017, he moved up to the main team. However, he played in one game for the Bills and made two tackles.

Bouncing Around the League

Borders spent the next two seasons on various practice squads and active rosters but never found a stable home.

In addition, he had brief stints with the Houston Texans, Jacksonville Jaguars, Washington Redskins, Pittsburgh Steelers, and Miami Dolphins, but only appeared in one game for the Jaguars in 2018. He was waived by the Dolphins in September 2020 and was claimed by the Tennessee Titans.

Breakout Season with the Titans

Borders got his big opportunity to show his skills with the Titans in 2020. He played in five games because some of the usual players were injured. During this time, he made 27 tackles, stopped seven passes, and got one interception.

Likewise, he did a good job defending against top receivers like DeAndre Hopkins, T.Y. Hilton, and A.J. Brown. Thanks to his efforts, the Titans became the AFC South division champions. Unfortunately, he hurt his hip in December, which meant he couldn't play for the rest of the season.

Signing with the Patriots

Borders became a free agent in 2021 and signed a one-year deal with the Arizona Cardinals. Unfortunately, they let him go in August. The Chicago Bears picked him up, and he played in four games, mostly doing special team duties, before they let him go in November. 

After that, he joined the practice squad of the Atlanta Falcons, but they released him after two weeks. Finally, in December, he found a spot with the Patriots and became part of their practice squad.

Making an Impact with the Patriots

Borders joined the Patriots' main team in Week 15 and played his first game against the Indianapolis Colts. During the game, he was on the field for 19 defensive plays, where he made two tackles and stopped a pass. He also played on special teams and managed to grab a fumble during a kickoff return.
