Laken Tomlinson is an American football offensive guard for the New York Jets of the NFL. He was drafted by the Detroit Lions in the first round in 2015 after playing college football at Duke University, where he majored in evolutionary anthropology.

While in high school at Lane Technical College Prep in Chicago, Tomlinson stood out in both academics and sports. He played as a starter on the football team for four years, did well in both offensive and defensive positions, and was also involved in extracurricular activities like chess, math, and robotics clubs.

In addition, he achieved a perfect 4.0 GPA and was ranked among the top students in his class. Tomlinson received scholarship offers from Harvard, Yale, and Northwestern, ultimately deciding to attend Duke, where he was recruited by head coach David Cutcliffe.

During his time at Duke University from 2011 to 2014, Tomlinson set a school record by starting 52 consecutive games as a right guard. He earned All-ACC honors twice and became a consensus All-American in 2014.

Additionally, he was a finalist for the Outland Trophy, which recognizes the best interior lineman in college football. Tomlinson contributed to the Blue Devils' success, helping them win 19 games in his last two seasons, securing the 2013 ACC Coastal Division title and the 2015 Sun Bowl. 

In addition, he also received academic recognition, being a three-time Academic All-ACC honoree and a National Football Foundation Scholar-Athlete. Tomlinson obtained a degree in evolutionary anthropology and a minor in psychology upon graduating from Duke.

The First-Round Pick Who Shined in Three NFL Teams

Tomlinson was picked by the Detroit Lions as the 28th overall selection in the 2015 NFL Draft, making him the first Duke offensive lineman to be chosen in the first round since 1987. After his two-season tenure with the Lions, wherein he started 24 games as a left guard, he was traded to the San Francisco 49ers in 2017.

During his time with the 49ers, Tomlinson excelled and earned the team’s Bobb McKittrick Award in 2018 and 2019, recognizing him as their best offensive lineman. He was also a nominee for the prestigious Walter Payton Man of the Year Award in 2019. In 2023, he transitioned to the New York Jets, where he currently plays.
