It was only after a few times when Bill started working when the complications began to fall on The Ringer founder. After Bill's scheduled interview with then-president Barack Obama who was fighting the nomination for the President against Hillary Clinton, was canceled, he stated ESPN as promise breakers.

It was the end for him, as by 2014, Simmons’ relationship with ESPN had begun to fray badly and was suspended for three weeks for repeatedly calling NFL commissioner Roger Goodell, a liar during a profanity-laced rant on his podcast.
