In the 5th round (139th overall) of the 2011 NHL Entry Draft, Shaw was selected by the Chicago Blackhawks. Shaw split time in the 2011–2012 season between the Chicago Blackhawks and their AHL partner the Rockford IceHogs.

On June 24, 2016, during the 2016 NHL Entry Draft, Shaw was traded to the Montreal Canadiens in exchange for two second-round picks. In 2018,  Shaw checked the defenseman of Dallas Stars Greg Pateryn on March 13, 2018, but was injured on the play. He wounded his knee and suffered a concussion.
