A native of Cienfuegos, Cuba, Yasiel Puig was born on 7th of December 1990, to Omar and Maritza Puig. His father was an engineer by his profession and used to work in a sugar cane factory. Puig grew up alongside his younger sister, Yaima Puig.

In the 2008 World Junior Baseball Championship, Puig represented Cuban national baseball team, winning a bronze medal. Then in the 2008-09 Cuban National series, he represented Cienfuegos team of the Cuban National Series. In his debut season, Puig batted .276 along with 5 home runs. He also, made his appearance in the “2011 World Port Tournament” being in the Cuban national team.

American Career

On 28th June 2012, Puig was signed by Los Angeles Dodgers for 7-year for a worth of $42 million. The club placed him on the 40-man roster and assigned him to their Arizona Rookie League team.

Puig got promoted up to the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes of the Class A-Advanced California League, on 13th October 2012. For Quakes, he played overall 14 games and hit .327. he then joined Mesa Solar Sox of the Arizona Fall League but did not play any game because he suffered from a staph infection in his right elbow required surgery and sidelined him for several months.

On 2nd June 2013, Puig was recalled from Dodgers. The next day, he made his Dodgers debut. In his first 15 games, Puig had 27 hits tied with Terry Pendleton and Joe DiMaggio. In his first 20th game he became the first player in the major league history to record at least 34 hits with 7 home runs.  

Since 2013, Puig is representing the Los Angeles Dodgers. In 2014, he was awarded All-Star award.

As of now, he is playing for Cleveland Indians alongside Adam Cimber and Jose Ramirez.
