Yana Kunitskaya was born on November 11, 1989, in a frigid city of Murmansk, a port settlement off the northwest coast of Russia. Kunitskaya belongs to white ethnicity and holds a Russian nationality.
She was born to her mother, Olga Kunitskaya, former professional gymnast and father, Joseph, former skier. She grew up with her sibling, Victoria.
Since her tender age, Kunitskaya became involved in martial arts. She has been honored with several titles and gained more than 12 years experience competing in taekwondo.
Aged 12, Kunitskaya started participating in hand-to-hand- combat. She was later transferred to St. Petersburg to live and study when she was 16. After a couple of years, she began practicing mixed martial arts. On another hand, she was studying to be a trainer in university.

She lost against Tonya Evinger at the Invicta FC 22: Evinger vs. Kunitskaya II on March 25, 2017, for the Invicta FC Bantamweight Championship. In the same year, Evinger defeated Irene Aldana at Invicta FC bantamweight.
During her four years career in the sport, Kunitskaya got her break, seizing eight victories. She won the vacant Invicta FC Bantamweight Championship after defeating Raquel Pa’aluhi on August 31, 2017. She was awarded 2x Performance of the Night during her career in Invicta FC.
