In 2018, as a freshman, he played in 12 games and was able to total 16 tackles. He was also voted as the team's most valuable player by his teammates. Moehrig's gameplay and tactics improved even more in his sophomore year. By the end of 2019, he was rated as the highest-graded safety in the FBS by Pro Football. Besides, he even tied with his teammate, Jeff Gladney, for second in the First-Team All-Big 12.
As time passed, his skills improved more and more. In his junior year, in 2020, he displayed a great performance and was able to rank himself among the national leaders with 1.1 passes defended per game. He was named in seven All-America teams and selected First-Team All-Big 12 for the second straight season.
Moreover, he was the Paycom Jim Thorpe Award recipient for being the nation's top defensive back. After accomplishing such a great feat in college football, on January 2, 2021, Trevon declared himself for the 2021 NFL Draft.
