Tony Finau is an American professional golfer who currently plays on the PGA Tour. He turned professional in 2007 at the age of 17.
He has not won any major title ut has won Puerto Rico Open and Stonebrae Classic. He is of Tongan and Samoan descent and is the first person of such ancestry to play on the PGA.
Tony Finau was born on September 14, 1989, in Salt Lake City, Utah as Milton Pouha Finau. He is the son of Kelepi Finau and Ravena Finau. His cousin is the NBA basketball player Jabari Parker and he has a brother named Gipper Finau. In his early years, he defeated the future PGA Tour player Daniel Summerhays during the Utah State Amateur Championship in 2006.
Tony Finau turned professional at the age of 17 despite being offered College Scholarship in basketball. His career began with mini-tours like the Gateway Tour, NGA Hooters Tour, and National Pro Tour.
In 2013, Tony Finau played on PGA Tour Canada where he made seven cuts in eight starts. He also won the 2013 Web.com Tour qualifying school and earned a card for the Web.com Tour card for 2014. He won the Stonebrae Classic in August 2014 which was his first title. He ended the regular season in 8th place while finished the Web.com Tour Finals in the 12th. With his placement, he was able to earn a PGA Tour Card for the 2014-2015 season.
Defeating Steve Marino with a birdie on the third extra hole of a sudden-death playoff, Tony Finau won his maiden title on the 2016 PGA Tour at the Puerto Rico Open. With his win, he was able to climb to the top 25 rankings in the FedEx Cup standings.
Finau did not return to defend his Puerto Rico title in 2018 but tried to take his chance in 2017 WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play but was unable to qualify for it. He was able to qualify for the first three majors in 2018. Qualifying for the 2017 Tour Championship, he was able to make his first Masters appearance as well.
Finau dislocated his ankle in the Par-3 contest a day before the first round of the 2018 Masters tournament. Despite his injury, he was able to end the tournament with a 10th-place finish. He made a 5th-place finish at the U.S. Open which is his highest finish in a major tournament to date.
