Tuwan Mohammad Dilshan or famously known as Tillakaratne Dilshan is a retired Sri Lankan professional cricketer. He is a right-handed attacking batsman and occasional off-spinner and field at point region.

 

Dilshan has represented Sri Lanka at the 2009 Twenty-20 World Cup and in 2011 and 2015 World Cups.

Tillakaratne Dilshan’s Early Career

Tillakaratne Dilshan is of Sri Lankan nationality. He was born to Malay father and Sinhalese mother on October 14, 1976, in Kalutara, Sri Lanka. He did his schooling from Jaffna Sinhala Madya Maha Vidyalaya and started his cricket playing career with Kalutara Vidyalaya.

Dilshan has also had a brother, Tillakaratne Sampath who is a Sri Lankan first-class cricketer.

At the age of 16, he converted to Buddhism from Islam.

Tillakaratne Dilshan’s Cricketing Career

He made his test debut against Sri Lanka against Zimbabwe in 1999 and scored his first test century in the same series. Dilshan made his one-day international debut against Zimbabwe in 1999 and scored his first hundred against the Netherlands in 2006 along with other century made by Sri Lanka legend, Sanath Jayasuriya.

He was the highest runscorer in the 2009 World Twenty 20 championships in England and 2011 ICC World Cup played at Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Pakistan, and India.

Dilshan played for Twenty 20 teams such as Delhi Daredevils, Guyana Amazon Warriors, Royal Challenger Banglore, Dhaka Dynamites, Sydney Thunders etc to name a few.

For his outstanding performance, he was named in ICC World ODI XI along with players such as Hashim Amla, AB de Villers, and Imran Tahir. He announced his full international retirement from all forms of cricket for Sri Lanka in 2016.

Tillakaratne Dilshan’s Personal Life

Talking about his personal life, he has been married twice in his life. He married his first wife, Nilanka Vithanage and the couple has a son, Resadu Tillakaratne.

After getting a divorce with his first wife, he is currently married to his second wife, Manjula Thilini when they tied their wedding knots during IPL 2008. The couple has four children, two daughters, Resandi Linama Tillakaratne and Lasadi Tillakaratne and two sons, Dihela Dinhath Tillakaratne and other son were born in 2017.

He was appointed as the brand ambassadors of Presidential Task Force to combat kidney disease Sri Lankan president, Maithripala Sirisena. After retirement, he has been a prominent fixture in Sri Lanka Television channel and can be seen as a guest host and also has been featured in several television soaps.
