Sid Abel was a Canadian hockey player, coach, and general manager who played for Detroit Red Wings. Abel also served in WWII in the Royal Canadian Air Force. Sid and Ted Lindsay were teammates and led the Redwings to the Stanley championships. The late player was nicknamed, "Old Bootnose".

Sidney Gerald Abel was born in Saskatchewan, Canada, on February 22, 1918. He played for the National Hockey League as well as American Hockey League as a center and would shoot the puck with his left hand. Abel's Ice Hockey journey started in 1938 and ended in 1954. He captained the Detroits in 1942 but went to serve in the Royal Canadian Air Force cause of WWII. When Gerald got out of the Air force he regained the team's captaincy.

In 1949, Geral was awarded the Hart Memorial Trophy as the league's most valuable player, Sidney assisted the red wings in winning 3 Stanley cups in 1943, 1950, and 1952. Later, he was traded to the Chicago Black Hawks and after 2 years, Sid hung his hockey stick and became the head coach of that club. "Old Bootnose" wore 4,7,9,12,14,19 and 20 jersey numbers throughout his career and his jersey no.12 was retired by the Redwings.
