Peter Vagenas is a former American Soccer Player who played for teams like LA Galaxy and Seattle Sounder FC of the MLS. He was drafted in the 2000 MLS SuperDraft where he was picked in the second round by the Los Angeles Galaxy.

 

Vagenas represented the United States in the 2000 Summer Olympics and scored three goals for the team all of which were on penalty kicks. He was the captain of American team during the 1999 Pan American Games held in Canada where he was the leading scorer.

Peter Vagenas' Early Life

Peter Vagenas was born on February 6, 1978, in Pasadena, California, United States. His parents Alex and Tassia Vagenas gave him the name Panayiotis Alexiou Vagenas after his birth. He has three siblings named George, Theoni and Dino.

Vagenas achieved his high school education from Saint Francis High School in La Canada Flintridge. For his college studies, he attended the University of California Los Angeles. He played college soccer at UCLA from 1996 to 1999. He led his team to the NCAA title victory in 1997. He was named the team MVP during his UCLA campaign.

Peter Vagenas' Professional Life

In the 2000 MLS SuperDraft, Peter Vagenas' name was present where he became the second round pick for the Los Angeles Galaxy. He spent nine years of his professional career with the team. During his time at Galaxy, he became part of the member to win the U.S. Open Cup in 2001 and 2005, and the MLS Cup in 2002 and 2005. He was the team captain during the team's double title victory in 2005.

Vagenas stayed away from the regular season of 2007 and 2008 due to injury. During his time at Galaxy, he had 183 league appearances, 14 goals, and 12 assists. His commitment to the team and his plays and local roots made him fan favorite and earned him the nickname Pasadena Pete.

In the 2008 MLS Expansion Draft, Peter Vagenas was selected by Seattle Sounder FC. He played two seasons with Seattle and was later traded to Colorado Rapids on November 22, 2010. Colorado declined Vagenas' contract option and he was elected to the 2010 MLS Re-Entry Draft.

Vagenas was not picked during the Re-Entry Draft resulting in him being a free agent. After some months, he was signed by Vancouver Whitecaps FC in April of 2011. The team decided not to take his 2012 contract option and Vagenas entered the 2011 MLS Re-Entry Draft. He was not selected in the draft and remained a free agent.

For the year of 2012, Chivas USA signed him on February 22, 2012. After the end of the season, his contract expired with the team and as Chivas did not extend his contract, he made himself eligible for the 2012 MLS Re-Entry Draft. He remained undrafted in both rounds of the draft.

In November of 2016, LA Galaxy announced Peter Vagenas as their General Manager and Vice President. He was removed of his general manager duties after the end of the 2017 season but still remains with the club as a vice president of soccer operations.
