Marcus Joseph Tavernier was born on March 22, 1999, in Leeds, West Yorkshire, to a family wherein football was more than just a time-passing game. His elder brother, James Tavernier, is also a professional footballer and currently captains Rangers the big shoes and high bar set for Marcus from a tender age.
Marcus started playing football in Newcastle United, but his most crucial move was to the Middlesbrough academy at Under-14 level in 2013. So, this happened to be a starting point for him as a professional in football, which would see him grow his skills and carve a niche for himself in the sport.
On August 22, 2017, Tavernier made his professional debut for Middlesbrough in the second round of the EFL Cup as his side registered an emphatic 3-0 victory against Scunthorpe United. This was just the opening salvo of an illustrious career, as he quickly made his name known by scoring his maiden goal for the club in the EFL Cup on October 24, 2017, despite eventually losing to Bournemouth 3-1. His maiden league goal came on November 5, 2017, against Sunderland in a 1-0 win, a moment that sealed his place in the team. He joined Milton Keynes Dons on loan in January 2018 until the end of the 2017-18 season. He amassed more experience even as the club was facing relegation into the fourth tier of English football.
This commitment and talent were rewarded when, in December 2017, he signed a new deal with Middlesbrough extended until the summer of 2023, which was extended further in January 2020. In these years, Tavernier has been quite instrumental for Middlesbrough in the Championship. He went on to make 155 appearances for the club and netted 18 times. His flexibility on the pitch, coupled with continuous performances, made him indispensable to the team.
