On December 20, he made his NHL debut playing against the Ottawa Senators, with which his brother Nick Foligno was playing at the time. The Sabres made a qualifying offer to Foligno on June 27, 2016. Later, he was signed on July 14, 2016, to a one-year contract.
As a restricted free agent, on June 30, 2017, Foligno was traded to the Minnesota Wild in exchange for Marco Scandella, Jason Pominville and a fourth-round pick in 2018 (along with Tyler Ennis and a third-round pick in the 2018 NHL Entry Draft).
