Lawrence Okoye was born on 6 October 1991, in South London. His father is Lawrence Okoye Sr who is a Nigerian. He attended St Mary's Roman Catholic Junior School and later went to Whitgift School. He played rugby union as a winger during his time at Whitgift School. He became a member of the academy teams of both London Irish and London Wasps.
Lawrence Okoye enrolled in the St Peter's College JCR and graduated from there. He has been offered by the University of Oxford to Study law.

Lawrence Okoye has always been an athletic person. In September of 2010, he began to train full-time for the discus event. His first international outing was at the 2010 World Junior Championships in Athletics where he placed sixth in the discus throw. The following year of 2011, he won a gold medal at the European Athletics U23 Championships. Later on the season, he threw a new British record of 67.63m at the McCain Jumps & Throws Fest.
Okoye reached the final with a throw of 65.28m in the 2012 Summer Olympics. However, he finished the competition with a twelfth place with a throw of 61.03 m. He was disappointed with his placing in the final.

Despite never having played American football at school or University, Lawrence Okoye stated that he wished to play in the NFL. Many teams showed interest in him and in April of 2013, he was signed by the San Francisco 49ers. He was added to the practice squad but later was waived in order for the 49ers to make the 53-man roster.

After his release from the 49ers, Okoye was picked by many teams, which includes teams like the Arizona Cardinals, New York Jets, Dallas Cowboys, Chicago Bears, and the Miami Dolphins. However, all the teams put him on their practice squad and released him before he could make any plays in the field. He never made his NFL debut.
On 18 September 2017, Lawrence Okoye was signed by Montreal Alouettes which had players like Rakeem Cato of the Canadian Football League to their practice squad. He made it to the active roster of the team and made his first CFL debut on 29 September. One month later, he was released by the team. He was then re-signed by the Alouettes on 19 May 2018.
