In the 2006 MLB draft, Medlen was drafted by the Atlanta Braves in the 10th round.
He was assigned to a minor league. On 22nd June 2006, he made his professional career debut for the Danville Braves of the Appalachian League.
In 2007, he played for three of the Braves minor league teams and then promoted to the Rome Braves to Myrtle Beach Pelicans and concluded the season with the Mississippi Braves.
He saw his 2008 season entirely with the Mississippi Braves of the Southern League.
In the 2009 season, Medlen got a call from the major league. On 21st May 2009, he made his MLB debut where he pitched just 3.0 innings, giving up 5 earned runs on 3 hits against the Colorado Rockies.
On 31st May 2009, he earned his first major league win over the Arizona Diamondbacks.
On 5th August 2010, he was listed on the 15-day disabled due to a partially torn ulnar collateral ligament tear in his right elbow.
On 24th September 2011, he was activated from the 60-day disabled list and pitched in only two games.
He started the 2012 major league season for the Braves. later, he was sent down to the Braves AAA team for the purpose of "stretching him out" to return to the majors as a starter.

On 27th January 2017, Medlen joined the Atlanta Braves for the second time, agreeing on a minor league deal. On 1st April 2017, he resigned from a minor league deal.
On 23rd January 2018, he joined Arizona Diamondbacks on a minor league deal. He just made one start in the major for the Diamondbacks and retired from professional baseball on 27th May 2018.
