Jason David "jay" Williams is an American former basketball player and currently, he is a television analyst.  He has played college basketball with the Blue Devils of Duke University and played for the Chicago Bulls in the NBA professionally.

Jay Williams was born on September 10, 1981, in Plainfield, New Jersey. He is the son of David Williams (his father) and Althea Williams (his mother). He is the only son born to the Williams family. Williams is of American nationality and belongs to black ethnicity. 

Jay Williams High School Career

Williams attended St. Joseph high school which is located in Metuchen. He took an active interest in other activities like chess after playing basketball. Williams has also played junior varsity soccer as a freshman and varsity volleyball during his senior year.

He was named as a first-team All-State player in New Jersey, a Parade All-American, the New Jersey player of the year, a USA Today first-team All-American, and McDonald's All-American that year.

Williams competed in the slam dunk contest and McDonald's All-American game and scored 20 points in the contest. Jay Williams received the 1999 Morgan Wootten award for his achievements and his work in the classroom, where he maintained a 3.6 GPA.

Jay Williams College Career

Jay Williams attended Duke University and he was titled as the ACC Rookie of the Year and national freshman of the year by the sporting news where he averaged 14.5 points, 6.5 assists and 4.2 rebounds per contest and became one of the few freshmen in the history of the school to average double figures.

William started all 39 games and led the Devils to the 2001 NCAA national championship earning NABC player of the year honors in the next season. His 841 points broke the 49-year Duke record of Dick Groat for points in a season and led all tournament scorers with the average of 21.6 ppg.

Jay Williams also set the NCAA tournament record for three-pointers where he attempted 66 making 132 three-point goals which were also good for the sixth-highest total in NCAA history. Williams earned prestigious awards such as Naismith award and wooden award as college basketball's player of the year in 2002 and was considered as the best player in college basketball during the year.

The basketball player graduated with a degree in sociology in 2002 and left Duke with 2,079 points which were good for sixth all-time.

Jay Williams Professional Career

Jay Williams was selected with the second overall pick in the 2002 NBA draft by the Chicago Bulls and played for the US national team in the 2002 FIBA World Championship. He continued playing basketball through the bulls.

Williams had an accident on the night of June 19, 2003, where he crashed his Yamaha R6 motorcycle into a streetlight at the intersection of Fletcher and Honore streets on Chicago's north side. He had serious injuries including a severed main nerve in his leg, fractured pelvis and three dislocated ligaments in his left knee.

On September 28, 2006, the New Jersey Nets signed Williams to a non-guaranteed contract, giving him the opportunity to play in his home state. However, he was released by the nets in less than a month on October 22.

Jay Williams then signed a contract with the Austin Toros of the NBA Development League but was removed by them on December 30, 2006, due to his injury. Williams has no plans to resume his basketball career, however, he competed for a tryout with the Miami Heat in the 2010-11 NBA season but was not selected by the heat.

Jay Williams currently works as a college basketball analyst for ESPN and has also done motivational speaking. He has also worked as an analyst on CBS college sports network during the 2008 NCAA Men's Basketball tournament and was a recruiter for sports agency Ceruzzi Sports and Entertainment from the year 2007-2009. Williams is also the spokesperson of Visions Federal Credit Union, headquartered in Endwell, New York.
