Graham started his career by joining the junior club of Saints in 2000. He then joined a professional rugby league club, “St Helens” in 2003, and his first match came in August of the same year against Castleford. He was later named for the match against New Zealand in 2006. He was named as the Young Player of the Year after making 27 appearances. He then extended his contract with the team until 2011.

James Graham was later honored with the 2008 Man of Steel award, making the fourth successive St Helens' player to win the prestigious award.
