Edson Buddle is an American soccer player who primarily plays the position of a forward. The last team that he played on was the LA Galaxy of the Major League Soccer. In the past, he has also played for teams such as Columbus Crew, New York Red Bulls, and Toronto FC.

 

Buddle has scored 100 goals in his MLS career a feath which only 10 other players have been able to accomplish in the MLS history. He has represented the United States national team in international games which include his 2010 FIFA World Cup as well.

Edson Buddle's Early Life

Edson Buddle, birth name Edson Michael Buddle was born on May 21, 1981, in New Rochelle, New York. His father is Winston Buddle who used to be a former professional soccer player born in Jamaica.

For high school, Buddle joined the Port Chester High school in Westchester County, New York. After graduating high school, he attended the State Fair Community College where he played college soccer for one year. He helped the team to win the 1999 NJCAA Division I National Championship.

Edson Buddle's Career

The year 2000 was the start of Edson Buddle's Professional career in soccer. He signed with Long Island Rough Riders of the A-League that year and helped the team to win the Northeast Division. He was the finalist for the A-League Rookie of the Year Award with him having scored eleven goals and four assists.

Buddle's performance in the A-League caught the attention of MLS and his name was entered in the 2001 MLS SuperDraft. He was picked by the Columbus Crew in the twenty-seventh overall. In his first year with the team, he saw little time on the field but was able to score three goals and two assists with the limited time that he was offered in the first season of MLS.

The name Edson Buddle quickly began to be associated as one of the league's best young strikers starting the year of 2002. He had scored nine goals and five assists in 1304 minutes of time in the field and had helped the Columbus Crew to a U.S. Open Cup win. He suffered from injury and had to be sidelined for some time but the times that he was active in the field, he was able to show great performance. In 2005, he was able to score nine goals and two assists by the end of the season.

Buddle was traded to New York Red Bulls prior to the 2006 season in exchange for Eddie Gaven and Chris Leitch. Due to his foot injury, he was only able to finish the season with six goals. The Bulls traded him to Toronto FC in favor of Tim Regan on November 22, 2006. His stay at Toronto was short lived as he was traded to Los Angeles Galaxy for Tyrone Marshall on June 13, 2007.

Galaxy was filled with great forwards like Carlos Ruiz, Landon Donovan and Alan Gordon as such, Edson Buddle did not become a starting member for the club. However, he would fill in for Ruiz or Donovan whenever they were unable to make it to the field whether it be due to injury or international duty. On his first season with the Galaxy, he scored two hat tricks. He was even praised by teammate David Beckham commending his quick growth at the game.

Edson Buddle's 2009 season ended with just five goals. In the upcoming season of 2010, he was able to score seven goals in the first four matches and had further increased his score by mid-May. He was called-up for the national team roster for the 2010 FIFA World Cup. He continued performing strongly even after his return from the FIFA World Cup. The Galaxy won the Western Conference and the Supporter's Shield and Buddle won the Galaxy's MVP, golden boot and Humanitarian of the Year.

On January 10, 2011, Buddle signed with Bundesliga club FC Ingolstadt 04. He played with the team for one season and was released from the team on January 31, 2012. He re-signed with Los Angeles Galaxy as a free agent. He was unable to recreate the magic with the team like the first time. He only played in 10 league games in the 2012 season and was traded to Colorado Rapids on December 14, 2012.

Colorado released Edson Buddle on November 25, 2014. After months spending as a free agent, he made a return to Galaxy on March 6, 2015. The Galaxy declined his option which resulted in Buddle being a free agent on December 7, 2015.
