Dalton Douglas Knecht was born in Fargo, North Dakota, on April 19, 2001, but he grew up in Thornton, Colorado. Coming from an athletic family, Dalton was one of those kids who was introduced to basketball when he was still very young. Growing up, his childhood was filled with aspirations of greatness on the hardwood, and it was crystal clear that he had a knack for the game.
Like all young athletes, he had to go through the usual problems of balancing academics with athletics while perfecting his craft. But it was his determination that distinguished him. Little did he know, these formative experiences would lay the foundation for a remarkable basketball career.
Knecht was a shy freshman at Prairie View High School in Henderson, Colorado, who developed into an athlete confident in his abilities. Although he started high school at only 5 feet 8 inches, a growth spurt brought him to 6 feet 1 inch by his junior year, a height that, combined with his relentless work ethic, enabled him to dominate the court.
As a senior, he averaged 21 points and 6.5 rebounds per game, with his name on the lips of every scout and coach. He had such an excellent performance, yet was not offered a single Division I scholarship offer. Instead of giving up, Dalton used this as motivation to make his mark at the junior college level.

Dalton began his collegiate basketball career at Northeastern Junior College in Sterling, Colorado, and wasted little time. He averaged an impressive 23.9 points and 7.5 rebounds per game at the school, earning a selection to the NJCAA Division I All-America first team to display his scoring ability and versatility. Success at Northeastern opened larger-program doors, and he transferred to the University of Northern Colorado for the 2021-2023 seasons. Not long into his time in Northern Colorado, he was just as bright, leading the Big Sky Conference at 20.2 points per game in the 2022–23 season.
Knecht further made the most audacious move, as he was transferring to the University of Tennessee for his final year of eligibility in 2023, which proved beyond any reasonable doubt that he had become a force with which one had to contend, recording an average of 21.7 points per game to go along with awards, including SEC Player of the Year and consensus First-Team All-American honors.
Dalton Knecht, after an electric college career, declared for the NBA Draft. That dream would finally come true on draft night as he heard his name called by the Los Angeles Lakers with the 17th overall pick in 2024. His highly publicized October 22 debut against the Minnesota Timberwolves was a big milestone in his journey—an exciting yet nerve-rattling moment when he stepped onto one of the biggest stages for professional basketball. During his rookie season, Knecht showed his scoring prowess and ability to perform under pressure.
His best performance was an astonishing 37 points, including nine three-pointers against the Utah Jazz—tied for the record for most three-pointers made by a rookie in one game. This performance set him in NBA history books and also tagged him as a rising star to watch.
Off the court, Dalton Knecht is full of humility and never forgets where his journey began. Both Corey and Carrie Knecht, his parents, were so supportive during this time. He stands at an incredible 6 feet 6 inches tall and weighs roughly about 213 pounds. Dalton's athletic prowess and skill were just what the mix ordered for professional basketball.
He often refers to NBA superstar Kevin Durant as an inspiration, having also lauded Durant's work ethic and on-court versatility. Outside of basketball, Knecht loves to spend time with his family and friends, reflecting on just how far he has come but still keeping an eye on what is in front of him.
Throughout his career, Dalton Knecht has compiled many awards defining his great talent and hard work. This year, especially when so much importance was put on college basketball, he got the important honor of being named the SEC Player of the Year for the 2023-24 season. Beyond that, he was chosen as a First-Team All-American in 2024 and was a finalist for the prestigious Julius Erving Small Forward of the Year award, plus the Naismith and Wooden Awards. These awards speak not only to his hard work but raise the bar pretty high for his future in professional basketball.
From a little boy fascinated by basketball greatness to actually donning the Los Angeles Lakers jersey as a pro player, Dalton Knecht's story is that of resiliency and hard work born out of love for the game. One wonders what is next for this talented player as he makes inroads into the NBA.
