Inside His Early Career

Durden embarked on his MMA journey in 2014 after receiving an invitation from his friend and fellow fighter, Travis Knight. Before this, he enjoyed a successful high school wrestling career, securing four area championships, two sectional titles, and reaching the state final as a senior.

Despite receiving a scholarship offer from the United States Military Academy, he declined it due to the birth of his son.

In addition, began his MMA journey in 2014, losing his amateur debut but rebounding with five straight wins in the National Fighting Championship (NFC). His success there led to a move to the professional level, where he won his first four fights before encountering two consecutive losses.

Cody Durden’s Roller Coaster UFC Debut Against Chris Gutiérrez

In 2020, Durden joined the UFC as a short-notice replacement for Luke Sanders. His debut fight took place on August 1, 2020, at UFC Fight Night: Brunson vs. Shahbazyan against Chris Gutiérrez.

Although Durden had a strong start, executing a takedown and attempting a rear-naked choke in the first round, Gutiérrez turned the tables in the second and third rounds, delivering more strikes and dictating the distance. The bout concluded with a rare unanimous draw, as all three judges scored it 28-28.

Submission Loss to Jimmy Flick

For his next fight, Durden decided to move down to the flyweight division, taking on Jimmy Flick at UFC Fight Night: Thompson vs. Neal on December 19, 2020.

Despite being confident in his wrestling and grappling abilities, Durden was caught off guard by Flick's flying triangle choke in the first round. At 3:18 of the opening frame, Durden tapped out, granting Flick his fourth consecutive submission victory.

Unanimous Decision Win over Aori Qileng

On November 20, 2021, Durden secured a victory when he took on Aori Qileng at UFC Fight Night: Vieira vs. Tate. During the match, Durden displayed enhanced striking and endurance, surpassing Qileng in all three rounds.

In addition, he executed numerous takedowns and dominated the ground game, ultimately claiming a unanimous decision triumph with scores of 30-27, 30-27, and 29-28. Additionally, Durden was honored with his first Fight of the Night bonus for his exceptional performance.

Guillotine Choke Loss to Muhammad Mokaev

On March 19, 2022, at UFC Fight Night 204, Durden challenged the undefeated Muhammad Mokaev, a standout in the flyweight division with a flawless record of 16-0. Despite Durden's attempts to test Mokaev's resilience with power punches, Mokaev remained composed and retaliated with his strikes.

Thereafter, Mokaev executed a takedown and secured a guillotine choke, compelling Durden to submit at 4:12 of the opening round.

TKO Win over JP Buys

Following his defeat to Mokaev, Durden secured a TKO victory against JP Buys on June 25, 2022, at UFC on ESPN 38. Durden took control of the fight early on, delivering impactful punches and kicks that visibly affected Buys multiple times.

 Additionally, Durden executed several takedowns and effectively employed ground-and-pound tactics. In the closing moments of the first round, he unleashed a barrage of punches that resulted in Buys being knocked down, leading the referee to intervene and halt the fight. This triumph marked Durden's first UFC knockout victory, and he also received his second Performance of the Night bonus.

Unanimous Decision Win over Carlos Mota

On October 29, 2022, at UFC Fight Night: Kattar vs. Allen, Durden took on Legacy Fighting Alliance (LFA) flyweight champion Carlos Mota. Despite Mota stepping in on short notice, Durden's experience and adaptability shone through as he outperformed Mota in every aspect of the fight.

The UFC star landed more strikes, secured more takedowns, and demonstrated top control, ultimately securing a unanimous decision victory with scores of 30-27, 30-27, and 29-28. This win extended Durden's UFC record to 4-2-1 and propelled him into the top 15 of the flyweight rankings.

Cody Durden Suffers Second Straight Loss to Tagir Ulanbekov at UFC 296

Cody Durden's most recent UFC match was a Flyweight bout against Tagir Ulanbekov at UFC 296: Edwards vs. Covington on December 16, 2023. Both fighters began with heavy low kicks, looking to control the pace. Ulanbekov then engaged with his hands, landing a big right hand that dropped Durden.

Despite Ulanbekov's attempts at a guillotine, Durden defended and escaped. In the second round, Ulanbekov secured a takedown, moved to Durden's back, and applied a rear-naked choke, resulting in Durden tapping out at 4:25 of the round. This marked Durden's second consecutive loss in the UFC.
