He is also the two-time winner of the Paul “Bear” Bryant Award that he won in 2006 and 2009. Moreover, he was also awarded the Bobby Dodd Coach of the Year Award in 2010.

Chris Petersen attended Yuba City High School where he played as quarterbacks for the high school team. Upon completing high school graduation, he attended Sacramento City College where he played football for two seasons and then transferred on a scholarship to UC Davis. He received a bachelor's degree in psychology in 1988 and a master's degree in education from UC Davis.
Chris Petersen began his coaching career in 1987 as the freshman coach at UC Davis. He was under Jim Sochor. From 1989 to 1991, he worked as the receivers coach for the UC Davis. While at Pittsburgh, he served as a quarterbacks coach for 1 season. He moved to Portland State in 1993 and served as quarterbacks from 1993 to 1994.
Later in 1995, he landed his steps at Oregon Ducks football where he coached from 1995 to 2000. He spent the majority of his career with Boise State as an offensive coordinator from 2001 to 2005. Later in 2006, he appointed as head coach for Boise State. On Dec 6, 2013, he agreed to a five-year, $18 million contract with the University of Washington. At the end of 2015, he signed a two-year extension contract with Washington.
