At the beginning of his career, Clay played the position of a fullback but has often lined up in the backfield as an H-back. He shifted to the position of tight end during his second season at Miami Dolphins.
Charles Clay was born on February 13, 1989, in Little Rock, Arkansas. He is the son of Charles Clay Sr. and Jerrilyn Clay. He was a student at Little Rock Central High School and was a member of his high school football team. During his senior years in high school, he rushed for 891 yards and 11 touchdowns.
Clay enrolled in the University of Tulsa after completing high school. As a freshman, he appeared in all 14 games of the season. He was named to the C-USA All-Freshman team as well as All-C-USA honorable mention in his freshman years. In his collegiate career, he accumulated 685 rushing yards on 145 carries with 10 rushing touchdowns and over 2,000 yards receiving with 21 receiving touchdowns.
Charles Clay was introduced in the 2011 NFL Draft where he was picked by the Miami Dolphins in the sixth round, 174th overall. The Dolphins signed him to a 4-year rookie deal on July 29, 2011. He completed his rookie season with the record of 16 receptions for 233 yards and three touchdowns. The following season of 2013, he had a record of 18 receptions for 2012 yards and two touchdowns as one of the team's fullbacks.

Charles Clay signed a five-year, $38 million contract with the Buffalo Bills on March 19, 2015. He was quickly announced as the starter for the Bills and started in 13 games of the Bills' 2015 season. He recorded 51 receptions for 528 yards and three touchdowns in his first season with the team.
