Charles Clay is an American football player who plays the position of tight end. He is currently in the active roster of the Buffalo Bills in the National Football League (NFL). He was previously playing for the Miami Dolphins who had drafted him in the 2011 NFL Draft. The Bills were able to acquire Clay in 2015 with a contract of $38 million.

 

At the beginning of his career, Clay played the position of a fullback but has often lined up in the backfield as an H-back. He shifted to the position of tight end during his second season at Miami Dolphins.

Early Life of Charles Clay

Charles Clay was born on February 13, 1989, in Little Rock, Arkansas. He is the son of Charles Clay Sr. and Jerrilyn Clay. He was a student at Little Rock Central High School and was a member of his high school football team. During his senior years in high school, he rushed for 891 yards and 11 touchdowns.

Clay enrolled in the University of Tulsa after completing high school. As a freshman, he appeared in all 14 games of the season. He was named to the C-USA All-Freshman team as well as All-C-USA honorable mention in his freshman years. In his collegiate career, he accumulated 685 rushing yards on 145 carries with 10 rushing touchdowns and over 2,000 yards receiving with 21 receiving touchdowns.

Professional Life of Charles Clay

Charles Clay was introduced in the 2011 NFL Draft where he was picked by the Miami Dolphins in the sixth round, 174th overall. The Dolphins signed him to a 4-year rookie deal on July 29, 2011. He completed his rookie season with the record of 16 receptions for 233 yards and three touchdowns. The following season of 2013, he had a record of 18 receptions for 2012 yards and two touchdowns as one of the team's fullbacks.

After the season-ending knee injury of the Dolphin's starting tight end Dustin Keller, Charles Clay took on the position as the new starting tight end. He was able to show a good performance in the position and was able to set his first career rushing touchdown in the week 2 matchup against the Colts. In the week 14 match against the Pittsburgh Steelers, he broke multiple tackles including one of veteran safety Troy Polamalu.

At the end of the 2013 season, Clay had a record of 69 catches, 759 yards, and six touchdowns. He was the starter for the following season of 2014 and played for 14 games but missed two games in week 11 and 12 due to an injury. His stats at the end of the 2014 season were 58 receptions for 605 yards and three touchdowns.

Charles Clay signed a five-year, $38 million contract with the Buffalo Bills on March 19, 2015. He was quickly announced as the starter for the Bills and started in 13 games of the Bills' 2015 season. He recorded 51 receptions for 528 yards and three touchdowns in his first season with the team.

Clay continued his performance with the Bills. In the 2017 season, he recorded 49 reception for 558 yards and two touchdowns. During his time at the Bills, he has made franchise record by being the first Bills tight end with back to back season with 50+ receptions and 500+ receiving yards.
