Ivanovic was born in Belgrade, present day Serbia to a business man father and a lawyer mother. She used to watch tennis from a very early age. She used to train in an abandoned swimming pool due to lack of tennis facilities.
Ivanovic started training when she was 10-11 years old. She reached the final of Junior Wimbledon tournament in 2004. Ivanovic defeated Venus Williams in two tiebreak sets of the Zürich Open 2004 and eventually lost in straight sets in the second round. Ivanovic won her first singles title in 2005 at the Canberra International by defeating Melinda Cznik in the final. 2006 was breakthrough year for Ivanovic as the pair of Ivanovic and Novak Djokovic reached the final of Hopman Cup.
