Theo Nathanial Epstein is a baseball executive and attorney who is currently serving as the President of Baseball Operations for the Chicago Cubs of Major League Baseball (MLB). He is the youngest general manager in the history of MLB, working for the Boston Red Sox.
Epstein is an American by nationality and belongs to the white ethnic background. He was born on December 29, 1973, in New York City, New York. He is the son of Ilene Epstein (his mother) and Leslie Epstein (his father). He has a sister named Anya Epstein and a brother named Paul Epstein.
Early Life and Education
Born in New York City, Epstein grew up in Brookline, Massachusetts. He attended Brookline High School, where he played baseball for the Brookline High School Warriors. Working for the Red Sox was his dream from high school. He graduated from high school in 1991.
Theo then moved to Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut, where he served as sports editor for the Yale Daily News. He lived at Jonathan Edwards College while attending the university. He wrote letters to several teams expressing his deep interest for them during his time in the university. Epstein graduated with a degree in American Studies in 1995.
Career
Theo Epstein was hired as the public relations assistant with the Orioles as he interned for three consecutive summers for the Orioles. He then moved to the San Diego Padres as director of player development with Larry Lucchino. Theo studied at the University Of San Diego School Of Law, while working for the Padres and earned a degree of Juris Doctor at Lucchino's suggestion. He worked his way up to become the team's Director of Baseball Operations.
Lucchino became president and chief executive officer (CEO) of the Red Sox on November 15, 2001. Lucchino hired Epstein to work under him and appointed him to replace the interim general manager, Mike Port. He became the youngest general manager in the MLB history as the Red Sox hired him at the age of 28. The Red Sox defeated the St. Louis Cardinals in the 2004 World Series, which was the first World Series championship for them since 1918. It was the third-longest championship drought in the history of any Major League team.
Epstein signed a five-year contract worth $ 18 million with the Chicago Cubs on October 12, 2011. On October 19, 2011, it was reported that Epstein's official title with the Cubs would be President and that San Diego Padres general manager Jed Hoyer would take the GM position with the Cubs.
Theo Epstein resigned a five-year contract with the club on September 28, 2016, which was worth up to $50 million. The Cubs finished the 2016 season with a 103–58 record, the best in the MLB and their best since the 1910 season defeating the San Francisco Giants in the NLDS playoffs.
