Likewise, they own a home in Santa Monica, California, that she purchased in 2005 for $2.85 million. Now, the property's value has increased to $5 million. She was brought up in Washington Township, Gloucester County, New Jersey. Lipinski started ice skating in 1988, learning initially from roller skating coaches in the Philadelphia area.
Lipinski’s first major competition was the 1990 Eastern Regional Championship for roller skating, where she ended in second position. She won the primary girl's freestyle at the 1991 United States Roller Skating as a nine-year-old. The same year she with her family moved to Sugar Land, Texas. In 1993, Tara with her mother moved back to Delaware, where she had trained earlier. Later she moved to Detroit, Michigan, to train with Richard Callaghan.
Tara first became national prominence after winning the 1994 U.S. Olympic Festival competition. She later became the youngest ladies' figure skater, winning gold in the 1988 event. She was placed fourth at the 1995 World Junior Championships and second at the junior level at the 1995 U.S. Championships.
Jeff DiGregorio trained her at the University of Delaware. In late 1996, she became the first female skater to land a triple loop/triple loop jump combination. Lipinski became the youngest person to win the U.S. Championships at 14.
In the 1998 Winter Olympics in Nagano, Japan, Tara skated to music from the animated movie Anastasia. However, Lipinski’s professional skating career was hindered by a series of hip injuries she suffered in training for Stars on Ice. In 2002 Tara underwent another hip injury when she fell hard on her right hip, then tore a tissue around the injured area. After her surgery in 2000, she stated that the purpose of turning professional was her incurred hip injury.
