Lwal Uguak was born in Edmonton, Alberta, on March 20, 2000, into a family of Sudanese refugees who had escaped the civil war in 1997. Initially engrossed in soccer and basketball, he transitioned to football during high school after being inspired by his cousin Emmanuel Arceneaux, a CFL receiver. 

Lwal's tenure at Harry Ainlay High School was marked by his standout performance as a defensive lineman, contributing significantly to the team's success in winning two provincial championships.

Throughout his high school and college career, he received numerous scholarship offers from NCAA Division I programs but ultimately opted for the University of Connecticut, where he played for the Huskies from 2018 to 2021.
