Kyle Alex Jamieson, born on 30 December 1994, is the giant of New Zealand cricket, quite literally! A fast-medium bowler with a right arm and a height of a massive 6'8", the tallest player to have ever done the Black Cap on the international stage.
Jamieson's cricket career began at Auckland Grammar School, and this saw him included in the New Zealand squad for the 2014 ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup. Initially envisioned as a batting all-rounder, a career-changing turn of events occurred when he took up bowling under the specialist coaching of Dayle Hadlee. It was a move that would shape his destiny in the sport!
Jamieson's domestic career is a reflection of his talent and adaptability, playing for a number of teams including New Zealand U19, Canterbury, New Zealand A, New Zealand XI, Auckland, Surrey, Chennai Super Kings, and Royal Challengers Bangalore. His Twenty20 career for Canterbury on December 4, 2016, was the beginning of his rise to prominence. He truly shone in the 2018-19 Super Smash, where he emerged as the leading wicket-taker with a staggering 22 dismissals.
The highlight of history arrived on January 1, 2019, when Jamieson bowled a mesmerizing spell, claiming six wickets for only seven runs against the Auckland Aces, recording the best bowling in a New Zealand T20 match. Another feather in his cap was when he also recorded a first-class hat-trick playing for the Auckland Aces.
In February 2020, Jamieson entered the international circuit, debuting for New Zealand's cricket side against India. His debut came in the form of a Test match on the 21st of February in 2020, once again against India, an ODI on the 8th of February in 2020, against India, and a T20I on the 27th of November in 2020, against the West Indies. With the huge potential within him, New Zealand Cricket bestowed upon him a central contract in May 2020 for the year 2020–21.
His contribution was instrumental in New Zealand's historic first-ever victory in the 2019-2021 ICC World Test Championship when he claimed 5 crucial wickets in the first innings of the final and was deservedly given Player of the Match. Jamieson hit a new high in January 2021 when he achieved his best figures in a Test match with 11 for 117 against Pakistan.
