As of August 2017, it ranks 25th in the FIFA World ranking.Iran has qualified for the World Cup for five times only behind most qualified South Korea and Japan from the Asian Nations. However, they have never passed the group stage so far. The only victory of Iran in the World Cup came against the United States in 1998. It is also one of the most successful nations in Asia with three Asian Cup titles (1968, 1972, and 1976).
Ali Daei is the highest scorer for the Iran national team with 109 goals in 149 games and is the second most capped player behind Javad Nekounam who has made appearances in 151 games. The team is currently managed by the Portuguese coach Carlos Queiroz with former Iran player Ali Karimi as an assistant and Ashkan Dejagah is the reigning captain. Iran is the first team from Asia to qualify for the FIFA World Cup 2018 is the second team overall after Brazil. They managed to be the group winner in the AFC qualification ahead of South Korea.
