Stanning’s journey into the history books began when she joined the GB Rowing Team Start Programme at the University of Bath in 2005. Coached by Paul Stannard, she was picked for the 2007 World U23 Championships and won women’s pair gold with Olivia Whitlam.
After having more triumph on the domestic stage, Stanning made her senior GB Rowing Team debut at the 2009 European Championships as a member of the women’s eight that finished seventh.

Upon her return to rowing in 2014, illness made Heather miss the European Championships but she continued her partnership with Helen at the second world cup of 2014 in Aigubelette, winning gold.
Not only this, but they retained their World title at the 2015 World Rowing Championships in Lac d'Aiguebelette, France. The following year, Stanning and Helen grasped their European title at Brandenburg an der Havel, and set the World Rowing Cup record time at Poznan.
In November 2016, she announced her retirement from rowing.

As Stanning is not open about her love life, she is assumed to be lesbian and dating her rowing partner, Helen. But after, Helen married her longtime boyfriend Steve Backshall, the rumors cooled down.
