France Vs Australia: France Awarded the Penalty with the First Use of VAR in the History of World Cup Soccer

France got the first penalty in the history of the World Cup with the use of VAR (Video Assistant Referee). France was awarded the kick from the spot after Antoine Griezmann was tackled by Josh Risdon inside the D-Box in the 57th minute.

Griezmann scored the spectacular goal giving the Australian goalkeeper no any chance. The Australian captain Mile Jedinak equalized shortly after with the penalty kick in the 62nd minute.

Samuel Umtiti was caught with the handball inside the danger zone. Jedinak made no mistake to make 1-1 equal.

The match also saw the use of Goalline technology. The chip shot from Paul Pogba in the 80th-minute hit the bar and dropped behind the goal line, returning back to the ground. Referee Andres Cunha pointed the ball to the midline after he was informed through the technology.

VAR was introduced for the first time in this 2018 World Cup while Goal-line technology was already installed in 2014 World Cup after series of referee mistakes in 2010 World Cup.
